Why Are Adoptive Families In Short Supplies?

Children should have a good home. They should always be given the love and care they need. Sadly, this is not the reality for many. Adoptive families help to save the lives of children who have been abandoned, orphaned or abused. This process is not easy, and adoptions cost money, usually a lot of money. There are many reasons why an adoptive family may not be able to get the child they want. They can be denied, have the child taken back or simply not be able to afford to proceed.

For singles and same sex couples looking to adopt a child, the process and laws can be horrific. Some states are actively pursuing legislation that prevents single women, single men or same sex couples from being able to adopt a child from a state adoptions agency or even from a private agency. People against singles or same sex couples believe that the child will suffer from emotional and psychological damage by having these people as parents. However, there is no proof that they would not be loving role models or that they would inflict psychological damage.

There is always a worry with adoptive families over whether or not one or both of the biological parents will change their mind about the adoption. It can be traumatic for all parties involved. There are cases where the biological father did not actually give up his rights and once informed that he had a child, came back and won custody. It is devastating for the adoptive family, who have formed a loving bond with the child, to have to hand him or her back.

There are also the rigorous rounds of paper work, interviews and home studies that must be performed before the adoptive families are allowed to take custody of their child. The expenses can be enough to deter anyone when you are looking at thousands of dollars for fees, court costs and the cost of hiring an adoption attorney. Many people find that they can not afford the process by simply saving and must take out loans to cover all of the expenses. But for those who manage to stick with it and can afford the cost, it is worth all of the hassle and money just to have a child.
